Civic Disability Services: Safe Haven for Differently Abled Description

Civic Disability Services has been a safe haven for the people who are differently abled. Since past 60 years, this non-profit organization has been catering to the tailored needs of the differently abled people. The organization is based in Caringbah, Australia. It operates across the South West Sydney, Southern Suburbs of Sydney, the Hunter, and the Blue Mountains.

Civic Disability Services was originally called as the Slow Learners Advancement Society. Later, it received the name, the Civic Disabilities Services as well as Civic Lifestyles. Today, it is more popularly known as Civic.

How it all started?

Civic Disability Services was incepted in the 1950s. It was the brainchild of a group of parents who had children with disabilities in the Sutherland Shire.

These parents managed to raise their disabled children without any support from the community. They were sure that their kids are capable of leading a normal lifestyle. Hence, they gathered and included their kids in various productive activities.

Gradually, the group of parents helping their disabled children developed into a small business. The workers started to receive payment for their contributions. Today, there are a hundred active employees with disabilities or mental health issues.

The Services

This non-profit charitable organization has scattered its services to many locations in the New South Wales.

The basic idea behind this organization was to minimize the discomforts associated with disabilities and make the people realize that they too are valuable and can lead a normal lifestyle.

The dedicated staff of the organization offers PCAS, i.e. Person Centred Active Support to the disabled people and help them to derive maximum of their ambitions and life. They help the people to realize that they are capable of doing anything and everything and help them achieve their goals on professional as well as personal front.

With an active personal and professional lifestyle and an active participation in the community, the disabled people live an amazingly healthy and normal lifestyle.

Civic Disability Services divide its services into three major areas:
  • Employment Services
  • Lifestyle Services
  • Corporate Services
